If you’re in Bangkok and looking for somewhere affordable, easy and hygienic to eat then look no further than the Pier 21 Food Court in the Terminal 21 shopping centre. The Terminal 21 shopping centre is an interesting shopping centre in and of itself to visit. Each floor has a different country theme and displays relating to that country. On the top floor is Pier 21, also known as the Terminal 21 food court.
Upon arriving at the food court the first thing you need to do is to change your money into a ‘prepaid card’. Most people go to the counter on the right as you can see. However there’s actually another much less busy counter at the back to the left. At this point its also worth noting that this food court becomes extremely busy from around 12 noon to around 2pm every day as office workers stream in for lunch. I usually change 100 baht (around AUD$3.80 or USD$2.80) which will be enough to get you a smoothie and a meal with 5 baht left.
Pier 21 offers a wide variety of Thai street food dishes some cooked to order and some served precooked. My favourite of the dozen stalls that I’ve tried is the Kitchen Delight stall. They have a very well proportioned and affordable menu. In particular their red curry served in an omelette with your choice of either chicken, pork or shrimp is one of my favourites. The Kitchen delight stall always cooks each dish to your order and in front of your eyes.
In addition to Thai food, they do offer a small selection of Chinese and indian dishes. There’s also a wide variety of seafood and curries. Once you’ve finished your meal, you can also find a stall selling mango and sticky rice desserts. If that’s not your thing, you can also find coconuts or ice cream to satisfy your taste. As I mentioned earlier there is a smoothie stall that sells many different blends of fruits. I recommend the strawberry and banana smoothie. If smoothies aren’t to your taste, there is also a drink stall selling water, juice and various soft drinks.
In conclusion, if you’re after an authentic thai food taste but don’t want to brave the street food stalls outside in the heat, then I would highly recommend the Pier 21 food court, it’ll be easy on your stomach and your wallet.
