Today I wanted to talk a bit about working with something lighter than a laptop for travel. Usually when I travelled with the intention to edit video. I would always bring my 1.3kg (2.8lb) laptop with me. It was only after upgrading to a new iPhone that I realised I could edit video quite smoothly on iOS. LumaFusion is the name of an app available only on iOS that can edit 4K smoothly. Even on an iPhone.
So I looked around on YouTube to see if anyone was using such a lightweight setup. And many were using the iPad pros for video editing. However you don’t need the iPad Pro for it. I came across people using LumaFusion on an iPad mini and I knew the moment I saw it that it would be the perfect travel device. Especially when paired with the BOW folding keyboard.
So I’ve been using the iPad mini to see if it could replace the tasks that I would have used my MacBook Pro for. And in my testing it’s a resounding “yes!” Another thing I tried for lightening the weight even more was to try using the iPhone camera instead of the Sony a6400. And as you can see in the video above it worked quite well. However I still think I’ll take a mirrorless camera with me for that extra step up in quality.
